Our History

At Brotherhood Credit Union, we love a good underdog story.

Chartered with purpose. Built with pride.

Lynn, Massachusetts, has been home to a diverse, hardworking community since the Industrial Revolution. The city’s character was defined by the devoted immigrants who built it. And that same spirit formed Brotherhood Credit Union.

The signing of the New Deal in the early 1930s marked the boom of the credit union movement. Dissatisfied by high interest rates at banks and a lack of adequate financial resources, the Beth Jacob Synagogue chartered Brotherhood Credit Union in 1934.

Their mission was simple: to “provide a dignified place where (our) members can apply for small loans for provident purposes at a moderate rate of interest.”

In those early days, Brotherhood Credit Union’s assets totaled less than $30, with a very limited selection of products and services.

Today, with assets totaling over $100 million, we offer all the deposit, lending and online products found at the big banks – without the high fees and impersonal service.

Our field of membership now includes anyone living or working in Essex, Middlesex, Suffolk or Norfolk county. And we operate three full-service offices in Lynn, Marblehead, and Peabody.

Success hasn’t changed the culture that sprang from our humble beginnings. We’ve stayed true to our origins, and we’re proud to provide a local, community-based banking alternative to the people of the North Shore.
